This weekend my best friend from college, Maia, came to visit. She spontaneously texted me one day asking if I was around Friday into Saturday because she was going to the Taylor Swift concert on Saturday. Of course I was free!!
She arrived around 6:30 Friday night and we quickly began our walk to dinner. The last time Maia visited we went to a Korean food place called Buk Kyung in Allston. It blew our minds. This time we walked to the location in Somerville to recreate our date from November. We’re cute like that.
We got two apps and two entrees to share. Apps were scallion pancakes (my favorite) and this other cheese, rice, fish cake dish (not my favorite). Maia looks at it and goes, “that’s definitely melted American cheese.” Haha but we always love trying new foods.
Entrees consisted of our favorite tofu, zucchini, onion, and black bean paste noodle dish. The flavor is so complex and delicious. Our other dish this time was a slightly spicy chicken and rice stir fry dish. Also yummy. To round it out we tried some black raspberry Korean wine, which was served in tiny glasses making Megan chug them like shots 🙄
After dinner we walked a mile and a half (me, in heels) to Toscanini. Oh the things we do for ice cream. We each got a large, which was totally worth it. I ended up with crunchy peanut butter (swoon) and bourbon ginger snap. So tasty! I ate it so fast as usual because I don’t like soupy ice cream. The line was out the door by the time we left because it was so muggy and gross! Bostonians know where to go for ice cream. Dare I say I might like it better than Ben and Jerry’s?!
The next morning we woke up at 0800. First, because I had to turn my pager on and second, because we had PLANS! Maia asked if I wanted to workout and I was like heck yes I do. I love that we both love food and exercise. She’s actually the one that got me into BeachBody and back into exercise. We took a three mile exploratory run through Boston. First we stopped at the Kendall rooftop garden, then along the Charles, and in Boston Common. The last stop was Blackbird Donuts, aka breakfast.
This weekend was a great weekend for tasting adventures even if my dress is feeling a bit snug today. Yolo. Maia and I try to preach that your favorite foods can fit into a healthy lifestyle and you don’t need to restrict yourself. We each ate about one donut and saved the rest for later. And we were out walking and exercising. Lunch was a salad because our bodies wanted vegetables.
Before heading back to the apartment we took a detour to Old Navy to go shopping. We each needed a few things and we were already at Downtown Crossing. It was SO fun to have someone to shop and explore with. But mostly it meant so much to have a friend with me who I can just be with. There’s no trying or awkwardness. We are who we are and that’s what we love about each other. You don’t get many friends like that in your life.
